Abstract
This study aimed to identify the political and intellectual grounds for opposing the rule of Caliph Abdullah 1885-1898 and highlight the efforts and positions of Caliph Abdullah and his political and military administration to accommodate that opposition in his rule. During his assumption of the leadership of the Mahdist State in Sudan, Caliph Abdullah faced opposition fierce political, religious and tribal conditions in light of extremely complex local, regional and international situations, and the reasons and principles that pushed opponents to break the authority of the Caliph and his rule varied as well as the solutions pursued by Caliph Abdullah and his administration between political and military solutions according to situational and spatial requirements, and the importance of this study stems from its treatment of an important stage in the modern history of Sudan. The study relied on the method of historical and descriptive research to analyze the course of historical events, and one of the most important findings of this study was that Caliph Abdullah faced political and religious opposition. It had its objective reasons and its own motives, and the Caliph succeeded in containing it by peaceful and military means, but it affected the stability of the Mahdist State politically and economically, and the study .recommended research and analysis about that important historical era
